tokyo market

2820 W Cary St, Richmond, VA

Carytown is a haven for trendy, eclectic shops. The street is always full, the sidewalks bustling with people. Tucked away on the eastern end of Carytown, near the Byrd Theatre, is Tokyo Market. The sun-stained posters with Japanese script showcase beautiful ceramic bowls and other goodies found inside.

Carefully and slowly shopping through markets such as this one is a pastime I love. There are so many fun, cute, gorgeous, symbolic, and detailed bowls of different sizes. The chopsticks for sale are no less vibrant in variety and vivaciousness. There are also mugs and other cups which feature coordinating patterns to the other dishes. Interesting snacks of all flavor palettes line the aisles, the bright colors catching your eye upon quick glance. The simple act of perusing a market aisle seems unreasonably fun.

I was met with ignorance upon seeing a sparkling beverage with a "calamansi" flavor. I Googled what it was and found it was a sort of lemon/lime hybrid citrus from the Philippines. I was happy to have purchased it after taking a few refreshing sips. The options for noodles and instant Ramen were vast, and it was fun to try to pick one that will push my spice tolerance to the limit. The knick knacks found throughout Tokyo Market appear authentic and wonderful, which speaks to the market overall.
