the byrd theatre

2908 W Cary St, Richmond, VA

Right at the tail end of 1928, the Byrd Theatre opened to serve as a stunning cinema. Flash-forward to nearly 100 years later, and the Byrd is still an impressive theatre that screens anything from cult classics to films fresh out of theatrical release. Periodically you'll even see proposals plastered on the marquee.

The popcorn is always nice and salty, and you can even sip on a hard seltzer if you are so inclined. Before certain screenings, viewers can catch the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ that elevates up from below the stage. There are elaborate paintings on the tall walls of the concession area which is where people first funnel in. Beautiful chandeliers peer gloriously down on the center aisles of the theatre itself and in the aforementioned entryway. The dim lighting gives a certain mystique to this incredible historic building.

The Byrd Theatre is a beloved fixture in Richmond. It still boasts reasonable prices and allows for movie buffs to experience some of their favorite classics in a glamorous setting. Tourists who already flock to Carytown should make a point to try to catch a show. It is special to have an operating theatre that is as seasoned as the Byrd. Those who believe in ghosts may pick up on some eerie energy, at least allegedly. In an era where streaming is the norm, visiting the historic local theatre is a worthy statement.
