tbt el gallo

2118 W Cary St, Richmond, VA

When it comes to Mexican food, a top question is whether it is truly authentic or not. At TBT El Gallo, not only is the colorful and delicious food authentic, it is fun and interpretive. A touch of fusion is incorporated in a number of the tacos, and the end result is nothing short of addicting and amazing.

The location itself is incredibly small, but the relatively new addition of outdoor seating offers patrons a chance to scarf down their tacos, burritos, or tortas whilst watching the passersby on Cary. Their house hot sauce is just as unique as the other menu items and is absolutely a must for those who dabble in the spicier things in life. Back when TBT first debuted, I remember going there several times in a row due to how exciting and delectable the menu options are. The owner would be in the kitchen, beaming brightly as he greeted guests. The passion he has for his restaurant is infectious and it is plain to see.

If you are looking for your boring, bland, run of the mill Mexican restaurant, this is not it. TBT adheres to traditional Mexican cooking but it is not afraid to bend the rules and think "outside of the box." They are working on expanding to new locations in addition to their initial building, which speaks to its demand. TBT will pop up at different events throughout the city, the enticing aroma of its spices and meats drawing in the crowds. There is a time and a place for more standard Mexican food, but when you are looking for something creative that still does not neglect quality, you should look no further.
