maymont

1700 Hampton St, Richmond, VA

A gorgeous and diverse backdrop for photographs featuring loved ones or strictly nature can be found at none other than Maymont. Just north of the river and south of Byrd Park, this landmark touts a mansion turned museum in addition to its array of gardens, channeling multiple cultures along the way.

Stunning fountaints, waterfalls, and stairways break up the beautifully kept gardens housing both native plants and vibrant transplants. There is even a Children's Farm, a carriage collection, and other wildlife exhibits in store when you make your (free - donations welcome) visit. Those who find serenity in natural gardens and arboretums will find no shortage of it at Maymont. Even on a day where the crowds are drawn, the spaciousness of the entire grounds makes it so you can still find a place of tranquility.

I have been to Maymont countless times, and the time I decided to photograph it for the blog it happened to be intermittently downpouring. In spite of this, the awe that radiates throughout the grounds was still firmly intact. We even encountered a young deer feeding off the land near the staircase that is pictured. It truly felt like we were connected with nature during our aimless strolling. Richmond has an abundance of wonderful nature to explore, and Maymont might come out right on top.
