lolita's

2929 W Cary St, Richmond, VA

I'm a sucker for a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant, where all the staples are on the menu and the margaritas are nice and strong. Lolita's is not quite that. Their menu is peppered with innovative takes on all the beloved classics, and while the drinks are still strong, they have more options than a marg.

When I went to Lolita's on a Wednesday night, I figured a reservation wouldn't be necessary since it's the middle of the week and Lolita's has been open for about two years now. I was remiss to think this way because as it turns out, this place is still hopping. We were lucky to get seats at the bar, which was still a fun experience. The backdrop of the bar is stunning and pretty in pink (pictured below). I opted for the Mexican Caesar salad, mostly due to being enticed by the jalapeño vinaigrette. Mouthwatering.

The ambiance is not to be neglected in my write-up, since it plays a large part in my appreciation for Lolita's. I also appreciate their novel approach to traditional Mexican food, but I find that I mostly just come for "the vibes." I apologize for saying such a thing but it's true. With all the other options in Carytown, highlights of Lolita's are its liveliness, colorfulness, and promptness. Even though service was quick, there wasn't a feeling of us being rushed out. For a night out, this is a viable contender any day.
