l'opossum

626 China St, Richmond, VA

How do you say "whimsical" in French? L'Opossum was a highly anticipated restaurant for shaky cam. It was tempting to take individual pictures of the framed photos that lined each booth, since every piece of décor offered its own splash of eccentricity and pizzazz. If the setting doesn't win you, the food will.

Although the space isn't large, it feels quite open with much to soak in. The moody lighting is led by colorful hanging light fixtures and topped off with small candles placed atop the bar and the booths. The likes of Grace Jones and Miley Cyrus played over the speaker at a pleasant volume. One of the more exciting items to order for me are cocktails, especially when they are as humorously named as they are here. Beet vichyssoise, foie gras, and quail were only a few of the menu items to grace our taste buds. The presentation was incredible, with some of the plate designs nearly stealing the show.

Tucked away in the unassuming neighborhood of Oregon Hill, L'Opossum could run under the radar if it weren't for its glowing reputation. I was enamored with everything from the ambience to the clever and thoughtful flavor combinations. Hell, even the butter that we spread on our complimentary bread looked fancier than your run of the mill butter. For me, renowned places like here require the patron to finish every last drizzle on their plate, and two cocktails, four appetizers, two entrees, and a dessert later, it was no easy feat, but alas, we saw it to the end. This is the ultimate artsy bohemian's wet dream.
