chiocca's

425 N Belmont Ave, Richmond, VA

If you referred to Chiocca's as "underground," technically you wouldn't be wrong. This top-tier sandwich shop in the Museum District is in a semi-basement, which really only adds to its appeal. The red neon sign displaying its name looks devilishly tempting for those on the prowl for a hot or cold sub (or myriad other sandwich choices), or a few drinks thanks to the full bar. The perfect spot for something low-key.

The exposed pipes have colorful lights wrapped around them throughout the tiny, cozy space. There are a few booths and a bar upon first walking down the stairs inside, with more booths tucked away towards the back of the restaurant. Chiocca's has a certain "hole in the wall" flair that I find absolutely charming. It's where comfort is aplenty, what with the food options and the retro trinkets placed on the ledge near the booths. Stickers, posters, and pennon flags clutter the walls, making the space very approachable.

As much as I love splurging and treating myself to a quote unquote fancy meal at a notable restaurant, there is something appealing about a cozy, worn in space that serves something as timeless as sandwiches that I frankly cannot resist. I ordered a grilled cheese (provolone, cheddar, and Swiss) where the waitress recommended topping it with tomatoes and pesto (phenomenal, love her for that). Each order comes with a bag of Utz and some pickles. After we sat and allowed the food to process some, we were able to waltz around the outside lawns of the nearby museums. A quiet end to a quaint night.
