belle isle

Over the River and Through the Woods, Richmond, VA

Outdoorsy people and their less thrilled counterparts can find tranquility and joy at the historic island known as Belle Isle, which literally translates to "beautiful island." There is an access point on the south side of the James River, but the stunning suspension bridge near Brown's Island is the way to go.

In its early days, Belle Isle served as a spot where Prisoners of War were kept. Visitors can read the various mounted signs around the island to read up on some of its haunting history. Despite this, Belle Isle remains a top spot for tourists and locals alike to visit. The large rock formations that jut out into the water offer a space for those who want to sunbathe near the rapids. Views of Hollywood Cemetary from directly across the river and sounds of the loud hums of rapids make this spot undeniably special.

There is a trail that circles around the perimeter of the island. Halfway through the trail, there is a spot where a quarry sits calm and still. Parts of aged buildings are kept to boast some of its history. A gorgeous view of Richmond's downtown presents itself once across the bridge. Although on a particularly nice day Belle Isle can see heaps of guests, there are times during the week where it is desolate and peaceful. This is a beautiful island that warrants multiple visits throughout the year.
