alewife

3120 E Marshall St, Richmond, VA

Eagerly awaiting going to Alewife certainly helps subside grappling with turning thirty, at least for me. For a milestone birthday like this, I wanted to go somewhere I'd never been. My boyfriend threw in the idea of Alewife and after perusing the menu online, I knew it had to be the spot to ring in a new decade.

We went with (mostly) empty stomachs in order to enjoy a variety of options. And options were aplenty. In the clean and bright restaurant with a semi-open kitchen concept, guests feel both intimately nearby while still spaced out enough for tables to enjoy their own conversations. The plates came out promptly and presented gorgeously. The cocktails I had included what was called a Clean Slate and a Coastal Break, topping it off with an espresso martini (classic). We tried both of the oyster options, crab claws, and shishito peppers to start. Our entrees were the rainbow trout and a scrumptiously encrusted salmon.

The hospitality of all of the hosts and waitstaff was spot on. No one came across as stuffy or pretentious even though given the quality of the food and drink, it's almost warranted. Every dish we had was flavorful and felt like a luxurious treat. We had a lovely evening watching the space grow increasingly cozy, with the string lights sprawled throughout illuminating the space in a warm glow. We basked in the glow at a table alongside the wall. The bar showcases long open shelves of liquor. Although Richmond is not a coastal city, Alewife encompasses a coastal air, which is nearly as nice as a calm coastal breeze.
