The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is one of the museums in the Museum District, and to me it stands out as my favorite due to its accessibility (free exhibits and shows!) and its lawn where people can set up a quaint picnic on a warm day. There is a rotating paid exhibit that will feature world-renowned artists too.
Out on the lawn that I just alluded to, there are a number of sculptures both on the plush green grass and within the fountains that liven up the setting. One sculpture in particular called "Chloe" is an optical illusion of a large head, that will amaze you upon feasting your eyes on it. There are a wide variety of small keepsakes and historical memorabilia in the African displays, propped up neatly inside glass showcases. There is a modern art wing that is quite fun and eccentric, as well as classic renaissance art.
Periodically, the VMFA will host jazz shows (pictured below), where patrons can purchase wine or other beverages and snacks at the café inside the museum to enjoy alongside the tunes. This event specifically was open to the public free of charge, which speaks again to how viable of an option the VMFA is for a nice date night or simply meeting up with friends. The museum is beautifully maintained and always clean, the displays are thoughtfully presented with vivid descriptions. Whether you are a self-proclaimed art lover or you find yourself indifferent, there is something in store for everyone here.
